Roller derby is a fast-paced, full-contact sport where two teams of five players each compete to score points. The players with stars on their helmets called jammers skate around a track, aiming to pass opponents legally while the blockers attempt to stop them. Jammers score points by lapping blockers, while blockers work to stop the opposing team's jammer. The game is played in short periods called jams.
The game is divided into short periods called jams, typically lasting up to one minute. During a jam, both teams' jammers try to score points by lapping opposing blockers.
The first jammer to break through the pack legally becomes the "lead jammer" and can stop the jam by tapping their hands to their hips
Jammers earn points by legally passing opposing blockers. Each blocker they pass earns them a point. The lead jammer can strategically call off the jam to prevent the opposing team from scoring.
Jammers: The point scorers of the team. They aim to lap opposing blockers to earn points. Jammers must have speed, agility, and strategy to navigate through the pack and avoid opposing blockers.
Pivots: The bloker with the stripe on their helmet. They can become the jammer when the helmet cover with the star is passed to them.
Blockers: Form a pack and aim to block the opposing team's jammer while assisting their own jammer. They work together to create walls and obstacles to impede the progress of the opposing team.
